For a Cat 1 Hurricane, this one nearly "did me in". Not just the week without electricity. It's now the realization that with the Hurricane deductibles on our insurance policies, yup policies, b/c I have two other homes we rent out that sustained some damages as well. I will be paying up to $20K+ out of pocket. I feel so "screwed" right about now, b/c these yearly policies are not cheap, I'm paying for insurance, but yet I'm not insured unless I have catastrophic damage. Go figure!!!
I also don't qualify for any disaster assistance, b/c our income is too high. I'm laughing at the "too high" part b/c we are not by any means wealthy. I clip coupons, make my kids school lunches (mainly from a nutrition point), buy local as much as possible and try to "think it through before purchasing something new." 90% of the books purchased for me and the kids are bought second-hand. I even have my kids in public schools, only b/c one is at one of the best advanced schools in the city and the other is special needs and gets more help than he would in a private school setting. I am very lucky and grateful for this, b/c private schooling would at minimum cost me $10K + per year.
On the other hand, we all seem to be healthy and I am thankful I still have a home. I know it could've been much worse.
Tyler is adjusting well at school, his first year of middle school, :( Jayson-Kristopher is doing well also, even though he'd assume not got to school at all. I really need to get him started on all of the projects and research papers. Tyler, if I can get him to write more than 5 sentences in a day, then well, it was a great day. He is becoming quite an avid reader, even if its only graphic novels at the moment.
I had some out of state relatives call and check up on me in the aftermath of Hurricane Isaac and express their love, concern and even offer help. Thanks to all of you!!!
I discovered a little gem at Rouses I thought I'd share (and by the way they were awesome during the hurricane aftermath, opened and stocked with more than I could hope for). Its 100% Raw honey with the comb, produced by a local Jay Martin, beekeeper on Short St. in New Orleans. If you too suffer with allergies and like honey, its best to buy it as close to home as possible. Its multi-floral, unheated and unfiltered and tastes yummy.
More Later.....
